About the Project
Pixie is display typeface inspired by the early 1990s handheld video games, where every form and symbols appeared as blocks of light on pixelated screens. Growing up seeing those digital grids from brick games to early consoles. I was fascinated by how simple pixels could build entire worlds. That nostalgic aesthetic of bitmap visuals became the core idea behind this typeface. wanted to capture that nostalgic, coded essence and reinterpret it through a modern typographic lens.
The Challenge
The main challenge was to create a typeface that felt authentically pixelated and modular while still being visually appealing and legible at larger sizes. Balancing the rigid grid structure with the need for distinct character shapes required careful design decisions to ensure each letter retained its identity without losing the overall blocky aesthetic.
The Solution
By adhering strictly to a pixel grid and using consistent stroke widths, I was able to create a cohesive set of characters that felt unified yet distinct. The use of sharp angles and square forms reinforced the digital theme, while strategic spacing and proportions ensured readability. The result is a typeface that successfully evokes the charm of early digital graphics while functioning effectively in modern design contexts.
